Benmore Chilean Hillside
Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
2016
The Chilean Hillside is an area of Benmore Botanic Garden near Dunoon. It contains a variety of Chilean plants and trees – many of them threatened – but which grow well in the climatic conditions of their adopted home-from-home in the West of Scotland.
Established in 2000, by 2016 the plants were starting to mature and the slopes were being to resemble a natural Chilean temperate rainforest. This was an excellent time to tell visitors about the importance of growing plants for conservation purposes and to reveal fascinating stories behind the plants.
I worked with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's Martin Gardner and Benmore Curator Peter Baxter to provide a masterplan for a comprehensive visitor interpretation scheme. This continued with design, editorial and production assistance to complete the project.
